Another angle on the fire pit made of native Kansas limestone.
Chuck built a fire pit this week-end. After he finished, we were sitting around it enjoying the fire since this has been another abnormally cold, wet weekend. Chuck said, "How do you like it?" I said, "I'm cold, wet and hungry. Give me a marshmallow and throw a damp sleeping bag next to the fire and I'll never have to leave the backyard to camp again."
Actually, we really like it. We used native Kansas limestone to make it and then lined the bottom with river rock. We didn't know but apparently rock has to be somewhat tempered because it started "exploding" when it got hot. It was like popcorn rock for a while. We will probably need to have a couple of big fires before inviting any guests over in order to make sure they are not hit with hot flying rock shrapnel.
I foresee a lot of backyard fires in my future. Though not tonight because it has been pouring rain with mixed hail and gusts of wind at 30-35 miles per hour.

That's awesome Chuck. I've been only dreaming of doing that and you actually did it. Can we just come over and camp in your backyard rather than me having to do all the work of digging a firepit in our backyard?
