Chuck and I were comp'ed a hotel room after our trip to see Joel last October. The hotel accidentally double charged us and it took them several days to get it straightened out. We decided to use the room in the middle of January when we figured we would be getting pretty stir crazy. The Kansas City Zoo was holding a fundraiser "Pancakes for Penguins". We decided it would be fun to go. After we arrived we learned this particular fundraiser was aimed primarily at entertaining children and featured loud "Justin Beiber style music". The website had promised "unique interactions with animals". And yes, I did get to pet a chicken and a snake. But what made the whole visit worthwhile was a side trip to the Polar Bear exhibit which was fascinating!
Nikita--the star of the exhibit!
Nikita is very curious and swims right up to the class to check out her visitors.
Nikita patiently waiting to be thrown a fish.
Chuck enjoying the exhibit.
(Poor Chuck was sick but refused to just go home.)
The parking garage of the Kansas City Library is pretty interesting architecturally speaking.
We also visited the Jesse James Farm. The house is not heated and it was freezing. Some of my ancestors settled in Clay County and did not live very far (about 20 miles) from this farm during Jesse's lifetime. They may or may not have known him personally but I am sure he was frequent topic of conversation being such a notorious neighbor. Chuck also helped me locate the approximate location of a family cemetery where some family members were buried (for my genealogy research). The cemetery is no longer in existence but based on landmarks cited in the account I feel sure we were in the right place--the headstones however no longer exist.
We were feeling so sick from the flu we had to come home early.
