Chuck and I went storm chasing on April 14, 2011. There was a huge line of storms advancing all across Kansas. We drove out to meet the storm then just found a hill to sit and watch the storm. I took this picture about 6:44pm.
As the storm advanced it got darker. Just lots of nimbostratus clouds. Nimbostratus clouds are the heavy, dark grey clouds that usually produce moderate to heavy rain or snow.
Here is a short video of the storm as it passed through Lyon county. I got soaked taking pictures out the open window and had a small accumulation of hail at my feet by the time the storm passed. The temperature dropped from 73 to 53 in a matter of minutes. Nothing severe developed, just rain and wind. But about 80 miles south of us there was a funnel cloud:
Nationwide there were about 50 tornados yesterday.
After the storm front passed and we were actually behind the storm, we saw this beautiful rainbow.
Double rainbow
We ran across this marker on our storm travels.
"Elm Creek Crossing"
DAR Marker Number 21; The Marker sits near the creek crossing north of Admire, Kansas. US 56 to KS 99, north past Road 380 .2 mile on the west side of the road. Section 29, Township 15 South, Range 12 East
We also ran across this one room school house on Hwy 99 and the corner or 390 Road, near Admire, Kansas. Of course, I will be adding it to my collection.
Wiley loves to storm chase.
The flint hills were all just burnt off and the smell of smoke hung heavy in the air.
About dark, we saw a giant bird behind us. We chased it through the woods but I couldn't get a clear picture of the animal...it was an owl. Really cool to see.
