May 21, 2011 Kansas Storm

We had a storm pass through our neighborhood.  The tornado sirens were blaring.  Chuck was watching the weather and I decided to step outside to see what I could see.  I looked up and saw this white rotating funnel cloud directly overhead.  It was a very dramatic and excitng experience. Chuck came outside and joined me as we watched it swirl overhead.

The cloud kept rotating as it moved North.  It wasn't raining and the birds were singing as it passed overhead.

It kept getting bigger and bigger and we expected to see it touch down at any second.

Pictures really don't do the funnel cloud justice.  It's the rotation that is so amazing.

People were out everywhere just watching it pass by.

After it passed over our house, we jumped in the truck and drove down to the lake. Here is a picture of the wall cloud from a distance...the same one that had just been overhead.

We drove a little way North and saw another swirling funnel cloud.  We never saw anything touch down though there were several tornados in the area.

Clouds over Lake Perry

If you look closely, you can see a very small funnel cloud hanging off this wall cloud. I thought for sure it would develop into a tornado.

A friend took this picture of one of the tornado's near Heartland Park.  This is the same tornado/funnel cloud which came over our house. Thankfully, it had dissipated somewhat before it reached our house.

At first my camera is turned the wrong way but then I get my act together to take this video of the rotating clouds.....The voices are our nighbors across the street, Matt and Chrissy. If the blog is playing music be sure to pause it in the red "playlist" box on the right side of your screen before playing video.
