Zippy

Last winter Zippy (and his wife, Mrs. Zippy) began raiding our bird feeders. They especially like my homemade suet. Each fall, I clean out my cupboards and mix any old nuts, coconut, raisans, oatmeal, birdseed and remnants of any boxes of cereal with Crisco. I pour this mixture into an old aluminum cake pan, freeze and then cut into four squares. Each section fits perfectly into my suet feeder. Unused portions keep in the freezer until needed. One section lasts about a month, so one pan usually lasts all winter. The suet attracts a variety of woodpeckers and of course, Zippy. (However, once out of suet the woodpeckers began drilling holes in our wood siding which made Chuck rather cranky.) After getting Zippy hooked on suet, it was rather easy to lure him closer with peanuts in the shell. By the end of winter, Zippy would grab peanuts from my hand and run a few feet away to nibble a hole to extract his treat. This picture was taken in early Spring 2006 as Zippy was getting ready to grab a peanut. Note: Zippy does NOT like the flash.
