Yesterday Andrea and I made candles. We went to Michael's and bought some supplies and then went back to her house to make our product. Our first batch turned out great (the blue candles) but we ran into a problem with the second batch (the red). At the store they sell plastic "bags" to melt your candle wax in. Warning: if you get the water too hot the bags will melt spilling all your scented wax into the water bath, causing a potential fire hazard.

We were trying an experiment to see if we could melt down old ugly candles to make new candles. The answere is yes, however you need to use a thermometer to make sure the temperature doesn't go over 180 degrees during the melting process. We also found out that instead of using the expensive dye chips, a crayon melted into the wax works just as well and gives you many more color choices.

Now we just need to find out how to make our own scents. We used the store bought scents this time. I must admit the candles, and Andrea's house, smell like a large, lavender meadow on a sunny day.

Our third batch of wax was green. We meant to add "bayberry" scent to the green wax but got confused and added more lavender. Perhaps we shall call those candles "Gravender". We even made some blue and green striped candles or as we like to call them in the candle business, Lavender-Gravender candles.
