Day 5 - Park Headquarters & Huskies

One of my favorite activities was visiting the Denali National Park sled dogs. The park still uses sled dogs, rather than "snow machines". (In Alaska, they say "snow machine" instead of "snowmobile". ) Park rangers put on a demonstration, harnessing the dogs and taking them around a gravel path. The dogs have learned when it is time for the demonstrations and start howling to be picked. They love to pull. It was in the mid-60's the day of our visit and much too hot for them but they wanted to work. The dogs are not a particular breed but the rangers call them "Alaskan Huskies". They have been bred to have long legs, big paws, thick fur and fluffy tails. The white dog was named "Hogan". Getting to hold one of the puppies was one of my favorite Alaskan experiences.
