Day 6 - Into the Wild

Healy, Alaska

Stampede Road

Chuck and I have read most of Jon Krakauer's books including "Into the Wild", which recounts the story of a 22-year old college graduate, Chris McCandless, who goes to Alaska seeking extreme adventure. Chris ends up dying in an abandoned bus not far from civilization. For more information on Jon Krakauer visit:

This book was just made into a movie, which was directed by Sean Penn and filmed in the Healy area. While we were in Fairbanks, the world premier of the movie was presented. There was an interesting quote from a Fairbanks professor in the Fairbanks News-miner which said McCandless was like 95% of the people who come to Alaska, the only difference is he died and someone wrote a book about it.
We did see lots of young men walking around Alaska with backpacks and it's probably just dumb luck that they survive.

The pictures above were taken right outside Healy, Alaska on Stampede Road. Chris McCandless died not far off of Stampede Road. We weren't morbid enough to hike back to the bus where he perished though lots of tourists, and Sean Penn, apparently have. Stampede Road runs parallel to the National Park and is a beautiful area.

We will probably go see the movie. Here is the trailer for the movie:

Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" is a very good book I would recommend if you haven't already read it.
